Important Correction On Harry Reid’s New Louisiana Purchase

An important correction on Harry Reid’s new Louisiana Purchase today.

RollCall reports that following Senator Mary Landrieu’s speech this afternoon where she announced that she would provide Reid with the 59th vote needed to move his $2.5 trillion health care bill forward, Landrieu provided an important clarification to reporters off the Senate floor.

It turns out the initial figure of $100 million in extra Medicaid funding just for Louisiana was inaccurate – the actual figure is $300 million in extra federal funding for Louisiana.

“I will correct something. It’s not $100 million, it’s $300 million, and I’m proud of it and will keep fighting for it,” Landrieu told reporters after her floor speech. (Emily Pierce, Landrieu to Vote to Begin Debate, RollCall, 11/21/09)

So if you are reporting on this remember – it’s $300 million, not $100 million. And it’s for Louisiana, not Nevada. The NRSC stands corrected.

By the way, the cost of the original Louisiana Purchase? In 1803, the United States purchased 828,000 acres – encompassing all or part of 14 current U.S. states and two Canadian provinces – from France for a total cost of $15 million.

Fortunately, Harry Reid wasn’t doing the negotiating back then.

So are the democrats going to payoff all the senators who vote for this with medicaid payments for their states but nothing for states like Kentucky which has 2 Republican Senators. This certainly is not fair and it may be unconstitutional.

This process is corrupt beyond belief. If I get this right, one Senator ‘bribed’ another Senator to buy her support for this monstrosity using my money?? Can someone offer an amendment to cover the cost to treat the nausea this bill creates? It truly makes me sick.

  • Shirley Hodge said:

If the Senators and Congress would be forced to take this health care coverage, it would not have passed. I do think these people forget who they are representing in DC. Come next November they are likely to be out and back in their own state, where they belong. What a sad change this administration has brought to America.

Now, now. We all know that Louisiana is entitled to more federal money. Right? I wonder if Mississippi is wishing they hadn’t recovered so fast from the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina. What about the Arkansas senator? I wonder if there is a provision in the bill for her state.

My understanding of this new 2000 plus page “insurance reform” bill is the following: In order to avoid paying higher insurance premiums to help pay for the uninsured/underinsured’s medical bills, we have to: 1. pay Louisiana an extra 300 million dollars. 2. take 400 billion dollars from our seniors’ health plan, 3. pay higher taxes for three years before any benefits are realized, and 4. be subject to jail if you don’t do all of the above plus pay your own insurance premiums, which of course will continue to increase.

    Am I missing something here?

They must all go…..every one of them for destroying our Country!

    We can’t give up!

call and write every day never give their phones or email a rest! We the people must take back our country!

Karen you did get most of it correct except we will be paying much higer taxes for 5 years, before this bill takes effect.
Some people are not seeing the whole picture. In the past week, the so called Govn’t committee has already reversed the preventive medicine for breast exams and now pap smears.
Does anyne not get this, this is the beginning of rationed health care.
Last count I heard, they have already found 17 new taxes to pay for this bill.
Not to mention, it also says in there, we will be paying a somewhat higher cost for our policies.
Russia warned us several months back what road this administration is taking. You can say what you want, but we do not have Russia’s respect. I happened to see one video, where they refused to shake BO’s hand.

    And so it begins.

All Americans should look very seriously at what the Progressive Democratic Socialist have done so far. Don’t you folks understand that they are destroying America and with this garbage of bill that Harry Reid and all the others are pushing will in effect further cause more destruction to our Constitution and our rights. Our Founding Fathers and our Fore-Fathers would have already marched on Washington for the purpose of throwing these damn Socialist out of the halls of our Congress and Senate.

Everything they have done since January is a perfect example of Socialist spitting and stomping on the graves of our Founding Fathers, Our Fore-Fathers and all the Soldiers that have died for Our Freedoms and Our liberty. All America needs to read and understand our Declaration of Independence and compare it with the socialist scum we now have in Washington.

Ms Landrieu: I was devastated to hear that you were taking a small bribe to give your vote to the devil. I am much more reassured now that I know you have recieved three times as much as originally published. When I first heard you had sold out, I thought I had finally found someone as corrupt as Huey Pierce Long. Now, I stand corrected. You are immensely more corrupt than I had even begun to imagine and leave Huey in the dust as a piker. You should be ashamed of yourself. You have sold this country back into slavery. We will soon be wearing either the chains of prison or the chains of unrecoverable debt. Enjoy the remainder of your term. You will never get another unless you join Harry in changing the Constitution to allow lifetime service as a congress person.

Corruption in LA goes back a long way. Ms Landrieu is just carrying on the tradition. Very sad

called Senator Landrieu’s office last night to ask the Senator not to vote for this Bill to proceed. I said, I understand that the Senator has excepted 100 million for the state of Louisianna, the person on the phone told me that it was a lie that the Senator has not taken that money for the state because it was illegal and unconstitutional, I said that’s why I am calling, this person sounded like she was about 20 yrs old and was rude, she even hung up on me! This Senator even has her staff lying to the American people.

There is no other word for this but BRIBERY. When are the people going to wake up? These kind of tactics usually end up hurting everyone; today Louisiana gets bribed, next year some other state gets bribed and on and on. Ultimately this is all going to be paid by the middle class taxpayers. The rich will never pay more taxes as long as they keep the loopholes in place. The country and the majority of the public are going to get hurt and harmed in the long run and in a very bad way.

I can’t believe that we are allowing these sorry son of a guns to take the stimulus money and pay bribes to get their bills passed. This is suppose to be against the law for me, even if I did it with my own private funds. I’m from Louisiana and to the people of America the majority of us will do everything and anything legally that can be done to get her but out of office. We the Americans of Louisiana promise you that. I’m sorry and I apoligize for my state for sending a corruput individual like her to Washington. You see, this I feel why the liberals are so afraid of Sarah Palin. If she was left loose in Washington like she was set free in Alaska to investigate all of this mess we would have to build more jails to house these criminals.

  • anita said:

There is a solution to this mess. All of the states who are against this should ban together and refuse to support this horrible crooked mess. Each state should have their citizens vote whether or not they want this mess. The majority rules. The states that vote to not support this mess should ban together and set up a healthe care plan to cover us. Allow insurance companies to cross state lines; allow small businesses and individuals to ban together to get a better price for health care. Have tort reform. (boy the lawyers would surely love this) We need to force our governors to enforce the 10th Amendment. States rights. We do not pay one cent toward this horrible health care plan. What are they going to do, put whole states in jail if we refuse to let them extort money from us to support this hideous thing? The last I heard America does not hav a debtor’s court. This is one of the reasons we left England. Now all of a sudden if you refulse to pay for health care insurance you have to pay a certain percent of your salary. If you don’t pay it, you go to jail. This is against the law. Come on, put me in jail. In fact I support every American who does not support this idiot plan refuse to pay and we all go to jail. Let them support that.

  • Scott said:

David Pennypacker, et al: I would think this whole health care scam is unconstitutional. Since when is taking care of everyone “general” in the term welfare? The original concept of “general welfare” was the federal government was responsible for the welfare of the individual states, not directly the people in them. As long as commiecrats run the congress (which I refer to as the U.S. Hospice) there is no Constitution, to speak of. The longer the commiecrats are in power, the less likely this country can survive as a country.

  • Ruth said:

Obama supporters, and liberals, now how do you like the “change” for which you voted? People just remember 2010 is just around the corner. We need to vote out every incumbent. They seem to have forgotten they work for us!!! I am not the least bit surprised in the Senator from LA. That state finally got rid of a crooked Gov., now if only the Mayor was replaced. We need another president like Ronald R. Where is one to be found?
